repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in the first single crochet. (36; 40)

6.  Chain 1 and turn, working in the back side of the stitch for this row only, make 2 single crochet in each
stitch around, slip stitch to join. (72, 80)

7. *Chain 3, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around. (S-M: 72 loops around;  M-L: 80 loops)

8.  Slip stitch into the next chain 3 loop 2 times. Chain 1, single crochet in the same loop, * single crochet in
the next loop, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in the first single crochet. (72, 80)

9.  Chain 1 and turn, working in the back side of the stitch for this row only, single crochet in each
stitch around, slip stitch to join. (72, 80)

10. Repeat step 7, 8, and 9 until the poncho is long enough after stretching (see blocking below).  If after
stretching, you would like it longer, simply repeat sequence of 7, 8, and 9.  This poncho ended with a
row of chain 3 loops (step 7),  then the fringe was added into the loops.

11.   BLOCKING:  Blocking can lengthen the poncho 6 to 8 inches!
This poncho achieves its best appearance when blocked. To block,
EITHER, saturate with water, place on a thick bath towel or blanket, stretch the length of the
poncho, AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, pulling as hard as you can to open up the rows of single crochet.
(They will take on a ‘broomstick lace’ type of long stitches.)
     OR:
Place on an ironing board, steam the poncho, (steam by placing the iron slightly above the poncho, and
applying heavy steam), then stretch the length as much as possible.

FRINGE:  Wrap yarn around a 6 inch piece of cardboard.  Cut across the bottom loops to make
12 inch long lengths of yarn.  Fold 5 strands in half, insert the fold through a loop on the
bottom of the poncho, then pull the ends through the loop, pull to tighten and form a fringe.
Fringe was added in every 2nd loop in this design.

OPTIONAL: Chain a cord of approx. 40 inches, pass through the neck opening of the poncho.
Add tassels to the ends of the cord.

HOW TO MAKE A TASSEL:
1.  Wind yarn around palm of hand.
For a longer tassel as in this design, wind
yarn around a 4 inch piece of cardboard.
2.  Tie into a bundle.
3.  Tie a ball shaped puff at the top with a piece of yarn.
4.  Cut open the loops on the bottom.
5.  Trim the ends evenly.
6.  Pull the yarn ends from the ball section into the center of
    the tassel.
7  Tie onto the project with the 2 yarn ends from step 2.
Pull yarn ends into the center of the tassel.

Weave all yarn ends into the finished work.
